Start Press! by dean

Dean Newsletter #1

Hello, friends!

I’ve decided to add a new feature to Start Press in addition to Playlist Name Pending articles, a regular newsletter about the things I’ve been into! This can open up topics for discussion so I don’t have to bend over backwards to find a way to tie it into a Playlist cycle. We’ll discuss music, movies, games, and whatever else I’m interested in. I'm also including it on this blog. Let’s dive in, shall we?

Caves of Qud

Caves of Qud is a roguelike1 video game that recently had its full launch. It has been available in Early Access for like, 17 years or something. I only bought it earlier this year but it had been on my list for a while.

It is really fun to run around and explore a new world each time and play with different combinations of stats and power-ups and weapons and strategies. The writing is poetic and strange. I love spending time in this super-post-apocalypse future zone world. Live & drink!

Sofia Bohdanowicz

This past weekend, I watched a handful of short films by Canadian director Sofia Bohdanowicz starring Deragh Campbell as Audrey Benac. These movies are all about Audrey researching family history, making connections to her past while thinking about how it all reflects the present. They are very slow, thoughtful films and you really spend a lot of time with this character. You learn very little about her, but when you do learn something it pays off and feels rewarding.

They Might Be Giants

Rebecca got really into They Might Be Giants recently and we impulse bought tickets to their current tour and saw them live! They are my favorite band of all-time and I haven’t seen them perform since, like, 2017 for some reason. It was so nice to see them again and they played a great set. We’ve just been watching thier music videos on repeat every night for about a month now, and I’ve been re-listening to their entire discography (which you’ll see in the final Albums I’ve Listened To post, coming very soon!).

Trader Joe’s Mandarin Orange Chicken

It’s so delicious and the chicken is really crispy when its done right and its such a quick and easy meal with some rice and stuff. Highly recommend this weeknight treat!

FewCandy

I love watching videos of people building little cities in Cities Skylines 2, and FewCandy is a really great detailer. She always has a clear vision for the project. Sometimes the players I watch make some crazy choices in their cities and it gives me anxiety, but Few always has satisfying builds and is a comfort to watch and to take inspiration from in my own builds. Her ongoing Cities Skylines 2 build ‘Fewladelphia’ is a great series to follow!

Okay! That’s about it for now. Silly little post.
